Introduction to Counselling Skills
This three day course introduces trainees to the basic skills used in counselling. The aims of the course are that:

Participants will understand the theoretical base for core counselling skills, receive a through experiential learning and will be able to relate these concepts to Transactional Analysis and Brief Intervention practice.

Learning outcomes
Participants will:

  • understand the core concepts that underpin counselling skills
  • be able to apply skills in practice within a developmental framework
  • relate skills to the practice of Brief Intervention Therapies and Transactional Analysis
  • have practiced and developed skills in:
    • attending
    • active listening
    • responding reflectively
    • summarizing
    • open and closed questioning
    • appropriate self disclosure
    • immediacy
    • responding to blocks to contact
    • recognising boundaries
    • confrontation and challenge
    • empathy
    • working with resistance
    • goal setting

Participants in this course are awarded a CPTI Attendance Certificate

This course is offered as a stand alone course it is also included in foundation year TA training and forms part of the first module of the Brief Intervention Psychological Therapies programme. Applicants for either of these programmes who have attended introductory counselling training recognised by BACP or COSCA can obtain an exemption for this course.
